Thirty-one years seems to be an unusual gap between new music. However, Animal Logic’s unlikely reunion single “Can You Tell Me” makes the wait worth it.
Vocalist and lyricist Deborah Holland, multi-Grammy-winning bassist Stanley Clarke and Rock & Roll Hall of Fame drummer Stewart Copeland have all kept busy with solo work and occasional mega bands, which have made them famous. “Can You Tell Me” proves the chemistry established back on their self-titled debut in 1989 continues.
It’s not that the group hasn’t played together since their 1991 breakup. This song is not a one off, but a genuine reunion that has the musical heft and vitality expected of these players.
“Can You Tell Me” is immediately inviting, with its prominent bass passages, powerful rim work, and Holland’s direct and forceful vocals. Touches of pedal steel guitar and harmonica, courtesy of the great Howard Levy, add to Animal Logic’s sonic sophistication.
This is an effective tease of things to come, and a welcome return by this trio of innovators.
“Can You Tell Me” is set for release on Nov. 18, along with “Ordinary.” Purchase them both via Bandcamp.
