From start to finish, the album takes listeners on a thrilling musical journey filled with energy, skillful performances, and impeccable chemistry among the musicians.

“The Vortex” kicks off the album with a bang, immediately grabbing your attention with its infectious melodies and mesmerizing keyboard solos by Sherinian. The driving rhythm section provided by Phillips and Fierabracci adds a powerful foundation to the track, while Bumblefoot’s virtuosic guitar work effortlessly weaves in and out of the mix. This song perfectly sets the tone for what’s to come.

“Inertia” follows suit, showcasing the band’s ability to seamlessly transition between different moods and tempos. The intricate interplay between Sherinian’s dazzling keyboard improvisations and Bumblefoot’s searing guitar solos is simply awe-inspiring. The rhythm section remains tight and precise, injecting an irresistible groove into the track. This song truly keeps you on the edge of your seat throughout.

The album reaches its peak with the epic and captivating “Aurora Australis”. Clocking in at over 11 minutes, this epic allows each musician to shine individually while maintaining a cohesive and dynamic sound. Sherinian’s piano/keyboard wizardry is on full display here, effortlessly taking listeners on a sonic adventure. Phillips’ drumming is incredibly powerful and precise, while Fierabracci’s basslines anchor the track flawlessly. Ron Blake- Mistaken Identity 

Baratine and Tenor saxophone master Ron Blake returns to original releases with “Mistaken Identity”.

The album, recorded by Andy Taub at Brooklyn Recording Studios, showcases the prowess of producer and guitarist Bobby Broom, along with the impeccable drumming by Kobie Watkins. The original compositions, “Beyond Yesterday’s Tomorrows” and “Grace Ann,” exhibit Blake’s innovative musical style, incorporating elements of jazz and contemporary sounds. The title track, “Mistaken Identity,” written by Victor Prorost, adds a unique dimension to the album with its compelling narrative and musical arrangement. 

The project, recorded over an extended period of time, also features Nate Reeves on bass for five songs and Reuben Rogers on four. The synergy between the musicians and the diversity of compositions make this album a standout in the contemporary jazz scene.

Blake doesn’t seem like a man who hasn’t released an album in fifteen years. His original songs are dynamic, while his covers, range from composers like Sonny Rollins and Johnny Griffin. The result is a welcome return by a master musician that begs for repeated listening.

“Illusion of Blue (side B)” by Jamie Leonhart

Jamie Leonhart’s e.p. “The Illusion of Blue (side B)” is a musical journey that captivates listeners with its soul-stirring melodies and exquisite performances. The e.p. Available for now only in digital form, provides and fascinating companion to “The Illusions of Blue (side A)” e.p. with it’s focus on Leonhart’s interpretations of standards and classic pop songs; however like side A it features a stellar lineup of talented musicians, including Emily Hope, Roger Rosenberg, Nels Cline, Dave Guy, and Michael Leonhart, who bring their unique artistry to create a truly remarkable listening experience in support of the talented singer.

The album opens with the enchanting rendition of “Peace Love & Understanding,” featuring stirring backing vocals , dynamic trumpet and the soulful baritone saxophone. This version differs vastly from the original by Nick Lowe and subsequent covers by Elvis Costello.The song sets the tone for the album, weaving a tapestry of emotions through heartfelt lyrics and the lush arrangements.

“Willow Weep for Me” continues the journey with its melancholic beauty. Leonhart’s vocals are hauntingly poignant, perfectly complemented by the tender saxophone performance of Roger Rosenberg. The arrangement starts with a minimalist approach and is haunting. As the song proceeds the arrangement opens like an aromatic summer flower and Leonhart lets  power and finesse flow.  The song showcases Leonhart’s ability to evoke deep emotions and create an atmosphere of introspection.

“Zephyr” takes the listener on a dreamlike escapade with its serene and delicate instrumentation. Leonhart’s vocals effortlessly glide over the mesmerizing piano driven melody, creating a sense of tranquility that envelops the listener. “Ill Wind,” featuring the exceptional talents Dap-Kings trumpeter Dave Guy, introduces a captivating blend of jazz and blues influences. The album concludes with “Some Other Time,” featuring the enchanting trumpet of Michael Leonhart.
