Following the momentum of his debut solo effort Until We Meet Again, Japanese-American drummer and producer Shane Sato shifts gears with his second single, “Deep Dive”. Released via Mixto Records, the track serves as a moody, sophisticated preview of his upcoming album, Wavelength.

The song finds Sato collaborating with his indie-rock outfit, Box Dream, transforming what was originally an instrumental sketch into a soulful exploration of new intimacy. The “engine room” here is particularly noteworthy; as a drummer-led project, the foundation is built on late-night session chemistry that leans into “cooler” textures and indie-jazz sensibilities. The song is old-school retro with a horn-driven modern twist.

The “sweetener” is undoubtedly the vocal contribution of Box Dream frontman Adam Rhodes. His raspy delivery provides a grounded, dark edge that cuts through the track’s melancholic atmosphere, acting as a deliberate foil to Sato’s brighter previous work.

Rhythmically enchanting and sonically vibrant, “Deep Dive” is a masterclass in collaboration and restraint. By blending jazz, indie, and soul, Sato proves that his solo project is less about a single genre and more about a specific, high-fidelity mood.

‘Wavelength’ is out in the spring, but “Deep Dive” and the album’s first single, “Never Let You Go,” are available now.
