“2X Lover” featuring Jude Cole is the next single for Stecve Porcaro’s highly anticipated second solo album, ‘The Very Day’. Written by Porcaro and Cole, the song is a showcase not only for Cole and Porcaro’s songwriting but also a powerful reminder of Steve Porcaro’s producer skills. Unlike his brilliant first album, which Michael Sherwood produced, ‘The Very Day’ features Porcaro in the producer’s chair. The resulting songs released thus far have a decidedly middle-of-the-road feel. That’s not a criticism, however. Porcaro avoids the formulaic leaning on his melodic sensibilities. “2 x Lover” features Cole as lead vocalist with expertly arranged backing vocals by Porcaro, Jason Scheff, Francesca Falcone, and Michael McDonald. Cole’s delivery of the vivid and relatable lyrics is spot on. The rhythm section, which features Shannon Forest on drums, Porcaro and synth bass, and Lenny Castro on percussion, delivers the bottom end with enthusiasm. Porcaro’s piano and synthesizers are subtle yet essential, and Porcaro adds a supportive and tight horn arrangement to provide a distinctive West Coast vibe. Former Lodgic guitarist Jimmy Haun and first call session guitarist Michael Landau lend their talents too, adding to the vibe and enhancing what is already a joyous performance.
