This version of “O Come All Ye Faithful,” featured on both 1998’s Chicago XXV: The Christmas Album and 2003’s expanded reissue What’s It Gonna Be, Santa?, is one of my favorite Chicago Christmas songs.

Part of its appeal lies in the restrained yet thoughtfully modern production by E Street Band keyboardist Roy Bittan. The track includes tasteful touches of acoustic guitar from guest Tim Pierce, a simple yet effective drum figure programmed by Jason Scheff, and light percussion accents from Luis Conte. James Pankow’s horn arrangement is simply wonderful, with his beautiful use of Walt Parazaider’s alto sax and flute, alongside Lee Loughnane’s piccolo trumpet, adding rich texture.

Equally impressive is Jason Scheff’s arrangement and vocal performance. A talented bassist, Scheff truly shines here with a restrained and natural vocal delivery, sounding completely authentic and liberated from any comparisons.
