Short Cuts: Steve Porcaro’s Evolving Craft: A Deep Dive into “Change” from ‘The Very Day; (2025)

The second single from Steve Porcaro’s second solo album, ‘The Very Day,” brings in Michael McDonald on lead vocals. McDonald, who contributed lead vocals on “Swing Street” and “Night of Our Own” from Porcaro’s first solo album, 2016’s ‘Someday/Somehow’, adds his usual swagger and technical acumen to this funky and socially conscious song, written by Steve Porcaro, Michael Sherwood, and Julius Robinson.  Porcaro brings in organic touches. Hints of clavinet and Fender Rhodes are present. Toto’s David Paich handles the Hammond B-3, and a Jerry Hey-arranged horn section provided hints of ‘Chicago 16’ and ‘Toto IV’.

The rhythm section, consisting of Shannon Forrest on drums and Marcus Miller, adds an unmistakable touch of soul to the song.

Lyrically, “Change” is inquisitive yet hopeful. McDonald emphasizes the central theme while the horn, guitarist Michael Landau, and section Paich play off each other. Lenny Castro’s congas seem inspired by the instrumental interaction, adding additional color to this gem.

Though we are only two singles into ‘The Very Day, ’ it’s clear that Steve Porcaro isn’t resting on his past triumphs and is still pressing his craftsmanship forward as an artist, writer, player, and producer.
