Talented multi-instrumentalist Fernando Perdomo brings his year-long, epic ‘Waves’ series to a rewarding conclusion with the release of ‘Waves 12’. The prolific artist/producer has given listeners 120 water-inspired instrumental-themed songs this year. 

‘Waves 12’ does not deviate from the theme of prior releases. It’s clear that Perdomo’s vision and focus on quality have not wavered throughout the series. 

“Denny’s Magic Numbers”, one of my favorite songs on ‘Waves 12’, is a medium-paced brooding guitar workout. The drumming is restrained, building tension and complementing the swirling synthesizer textures that Perdomo is known for, along with his passionate guitar work. The song would be an excellent foundation for a sci-fi movie soundtrack. Yet it is in no way background music. 

“Frozen Oceans” is an outer-worldly vamp with soaring leads and what I assume is a synth-generated wah-wah, which adds to the song’s mystique. spashes of cymbal convey crashing waves, and the song’s theme is menacing yet ultimately rewarding. 

“Land Ho Sea Hag” shimmers with pulsating energy. Perdomo employs a variety of guitar and keyboard textures while weaving in a straightforward drum pattern and congas before a whirlpool of sonics forces a change of course. It’s unclear if the protagonist reaches shore, but what is clear is that the journey was well worth it. 

Another contender for a favorite from ‘Waves 12’ is “EZ”. Funky and loaded with attitude, the song screams for repeated listening. Sonically, Perdomo’s multiple guitars each provide a piece of the puzzle. I don’t know the significance of the title but I do know this song is a rocking joy. 

The album and the series close with an epic, “The Final Wave”.  This thirteen-minute tour de force features dazzling lead guitars, bright rhythmic guitar, melodic bass passages, and rollicking drums. The mid-song breakdown features some of Perdomo’s most unhinged guitar work on the album, as the song takes off in an unparalleled flight of fancy . It is a fitting end for ‘Waves 12’ and also the ‘Waves’ series.
